Christian Shaw/Paisley Witch Trials Project

NOISE is developing a new opera based on the Paisley witch trials of 1697. Christian Shaw, eleven years old at the time, was the main witness at the trial. She was instrumental in the conviction of four women and three men. Six were hanged and then burned, one committed suicide in jail. Later in life Shaw became a famous businesswoman and helped create the Paisley thread and weaving industry.

 

The opera is in development and the company plans to perform the piece in spring/summer 2025.
